COUNTRY MUSIC TO THE RESCUE!
Country legend Moe Bandy aids fellow singer, Gene Watson on the road And later, a Gene Watson fan offers an amazing gift.
Gene Watson on his way to perform at the Fall Festival in McLeansboro, Illinois Saturday, September 14th, country music legends tour bus blew a tire on I-64 , 60 miles from the festival grounds. In an amazing stroke of luck, Gene’s good friend and fellow country music artist, Moe Bandy, who was also on the McLeansboro show, just happened to be driving by in his tour bus and offered his help. With Moe Bandy’s help, a temporary tire was put in place and both tour buses made it to the show on time. The resourceful duo once worked as a professional bull rider (Moe) and professional auto mechanic (Gene) so they are no strangers to hard work.
That evening, Gene Watson re-told his road story and mentioned from stage, that he was in need of a tire and a bus jack. What happened next is straight from the heartland. A Gene Watson fan, Larry Myers, came forward and offered his help. As it turned out, Myers drives an 18 wheeler and has his own home garage outfitted to maintain his big rig. At midnight when the show was over, a local McLeansboro policeman, personally escorted Gene and his crew the 15 miles out of town to Mr. Myers’ home garage. Mr. Myers not only changed the tire but refused all offers to pay for the service and the tire. The only payment he would accept was a signed photo from Gene Watson. Mr. Myers declared the event to be one of the great highlights of his life, as he is a lifelong fan of Gene Watson. Gene Watson stated “This is the real America that we know and love. Our country music fans are the best there is and I don’t have the words to express my gratitude to Larry Myers and the wonderful police officer who came to our rescue. Without their extraordinary effort, we’d probably still be waiting for service. These are the everyday heroes that are the backbone of our great country.”
Gene Watson, age 69, came to national attention with the 1974 hit “Love In the Hot Afternoon” (Capitol Records) and went on to amass 6 #1s, 23 Top Tens and over 75 charted songs. Some of his most popular hits are “Farewell Party”, “Fourteen Carat Mind” and “Paper Rosie”.
