Benton County and the City of Camden, Tenn., will serve as hosts for a three-day event honoring the lives and musical legacies of Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins and Randy Hughes, all of whom died in a tragic plane crash on March 5, 1963.
"Gone, But Not Forgotten" is the title of the 50th anniversary event at Camden's New Beginnings Annex on South Forrest Avenue, which will feature concerts and memorial activities Thursday, Feb. 28., through Saturday, March. 2., including a Feb. 28 performance by bluegrass music's The Grascals.
“We’re glad to be a part of an event that honors some of the most influential Opry stars of all time," Jamie Johnson of The Grascals told Examiner.com in a Feb. 23 interview. "Hollywood really escalated Patsy Cline’s status as an icon, but Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins were huge stars at the time of their deaths.
Location: New Beginnings Annex, South Forrest Avenue, Camden, Tenn.
"We’ve added some of their music to our show and are eager to do those tunes justice, especially since we think so highly of Miss Jean Shepard," Johnson added. "You can bet she’ll let us know if we’re not up to snuff!”
The following day, Friday, March 1, the event will feature a panel discussion with country stars Bill Anderson and Jean Shepard (who was the wife of Hawkins), along with members of the Copas family, as well as music historian/writer Robert K. Oermann, Billboard's Chuck Dauphin and more. Additionally, Grand Ole Opry members Anderson and Shepard will perform, as will Hawkshaw Hawkins Jr.
In addition to a candlelight vigil at the Camden-based Patsy Cline Memorial site on Saturday, March 2, and a concert by The American Three, recording artist Mandy Barnett, star of "Always Patsy Cline," also will perform at 3 p.m.
