February is designated National Heart Month, and within that is Congenital Heart Disease Week (Feb. 7-14). Paul Cardall, an award-winning pianist and composer, was born with complex congenital heart disease. He received a heart transplant in 2009, after 385 days on the waiting list.
Cardall spends a large amount of his time bringing awareness to congenital heart issues, primarily through his music, but also through his own philanthropic work. Cardall and his wife Tina initiated The Paul & Kristina Cardall Family Scholarship for Students Affected by Congenital Disease. The scholarship is affiliated with the Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Additionally, Cardall is on the board of Saving Tiny Hearts, an organization that raises funds for research of congenital heart defects.
Cardall’s two just-released projects are a reflection of his life as a cardiac patient. The Broken Miracle is both an album and a fictional novel written by J.D. Netto, based on the pianist’s life. The album is more than a colorful collection of 19 emotionally-charged songs. The Broken Miracle is a musical memoir; a personal manifesto that celebrates a life filled with nearly unfathomable tragedy.
An enthusiastic collaborator, Cardall welcomes an all-star cast of creative partners on the album. The title track was penned with Christian music veteran Matt Hammitt and Carter Forge, and is sung by Hammitt. “Broken Machine” features singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata's vocals on the tune Cardall co-wrote with Yamagata and Trevor Price. Neon Trees' Tyler Glenn is featured on the emotional "I Know It Hurts." The project also includes appearances by Ty Herndon, J. Daniel, and Akelee, while pop-star David Archuleta sings the power-ballad “My Heart Beats for You.” Two collaborations, "All I See Is Snow," and "The Man With Half A Heart," feature country duo Thompson Square.
